| Samuel is first found at Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1639, where hewas baptized on February 3, 1644, probably a perquisite for membership in the church. His wife, Thomasin joined the church of Rev. Lothrop at Barnstable on January 20, 1649/50, two weeks before the baptism of their of their children. This was probable because of dissatisfaction with the Yarmouth Church and its minister. On June 7, 1650 Samuel became a freeman at Barstable. Thomasine and its variations is a unique name, probably used by related families for several generations. Samuel married William Lumpkin's daughter Thomasin, who, had the same name as her mother and, by co-incidence, the same name as her mother-in-law.
In 1653, Samuel Mayo, William Leveridge and Peter Wright bought fromthe Indian Sachem, Assiapum (or Moheness) a tract of land on Long Island located where Oyster Bay is now situated. Mr. Leverage, first pastor of the Sandwich Church owned a trading vessel named Desire. Samuel, being a mariner, was hired by Leveridge to be master of this bark, a packet he ran between Boston and Cape Cod to transport his goods. It was the first important ship of Barnstable, of 120 tons. On one voyage, his vessel was overtaken and captured in Hampstead Harbor by Thomas Baxter, acting by pretence under the authority of Rhode Island. Samuel was able to recover the boat from Baxter.
In August, 1643, he was one of those between 16 and 60 able to beararms in Barnstable. He was a selectman at Eastham for six years.
Samuel Mayo removed sometime after 1650 to Boston where his estate wassettled after a inventory taken by his father who was acting as administrator, because of Thomason's refusing to do on April 26, 1664.
NOTE: Rev. John Mayo (Sanuels father) administrator of Samuels willdated 26 Apr 1664. The holdings were apprised by Christoper Gibson and Michael Willa as being worth L21.8.10. Rev. Mayo desposited L26.0.0 on April of 1664.
